The 2341 Mile Challenge

In June 2007 a team of three paddlers from Uttoxeter, Staffordshire will attempt to canoe the 2341 miles of the Mississippi River in the USA. The adventure will be undertaken for personal challenges and to raise funds for Spinal Research in the United Kingdom.

The Mississippi River runs from Lake Itasca, Minnesota near the Canadian border, all the way to New Orleans, Louisiana in the south of the USA. It passes through 10 states to it's end at the Gulf of Mexico.

There will be many challenges along the way. One of the team is a para -plegic, paralysed from the chest down. There will be many issues regarding accessibility and skin related problems associated with a spinal cord injury. Apart from the arduous 35 mile a day average which the team intends to paddle there will be a number of other challenges en route. These include the climate, the wildlife (Bears, Wolves, Snakes and Alligators) and the amount of large river traffic associated with one of the busiest rivers in the world!

The team will use a new Wenonah model of canoe, called The Seneca. It is a versatile 3-man Canadian type canoe, extremely suited to 3-man paddling and trips of this type. There are many towns and cities along the way where they will be able to re-supply food and water. They will carry all of their personal kit, camping kit and Dan's medical supplies with wheelchair on top!

Follow the team as they progress down thje river.
